How Often Does LP SmartSide Need to Be Painted? A Minnesota Contractor's Guide

LP SmartSide typically needs repainting every 7 to 15 years , depending on your paint quality, prep work, and how much direct sun and weather exposure your home gets. In Minnesota, where we deal with extreme freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and intense summer UV, most homeowners see 10 to 12 years before a full repaint is needed — if the original job was done right.

That's significantly longer than traditional wood siding (5–7 years) and comparable to fiber cement like James Hardie. The key difference: LP SmartSide's engineered wood substrate holds paint better than natural cedar because the SmartGuard manufacturing process creates a more uniform, stable surface.

LP SmartSide must be primed on all six sides before installation — all edges, cuts, and faces. If your installer skipped back-priming or didn't seal cut edges, moisture can penetrate from behind and cause paint failure years before it should. Proper caulking at seams and trim joints is equally critical.

South- and west-facing walls take the hardest UV hit in Minnesota. These sides may need touch-ups or repainting 2–3 years sooner than north-facing walls on the same house. Dark colors fade faster than light colors regardless of brand.

• Fading: Compare a protected area (under a soffit) to an exposed area. If there's a noticeable color difference, it's time to plan.
• Hairline cracking: Small cracks in the paint film mean the coating is losing flexibility. Repainting now prevents peeling later.
• Peeling or flaking: This means moisture is getting behind the paint. Address the moisture source first, then repaint.
• Bare wood showing: This is urgent. Exposed LP SmartSide substrate needs to be primed and painted immediately to prevent moisture damage.

For LP SmartSide, we strongly recommend professional repainting. Here's why:

Professional cost: $3,000–$7,000 for a typical 2,000 sq ft Minnesota home (includes power washing, scraping, priming bare spots, two coats of premium paint, and caulking).

DIY cost: $800–$1,500 in materials, but you risk improper prep, missed moisture issues, and voiding your LP warranty if you don't follow their coating specifications.

LP requires specific paint types (100% acrylic latex) and application methods. Using the wrong product — like oil-based paint or elastomeric coatings — can void your substrate warranty.

• Annual inspection: Walk your home every spring. Look for caulk gaps, paint cracks, and any areas where water could be getting behind the siding.
• Clean annually: A gentle garden hose rinse (no pressure washer above 1,500 PSI) removes dirt and mildew that break down paint faster.
• Keep landscaping trimmed: Bushes and trees touching siding trap moisture and cause premature paint failure.
• Fix gutters and grading: Water is the #1 enemy. Make sure water drains away from your siding, not toward it.
• Touch up promptly: A $50 touch-up now prevents a $5,000 repaint later. Don't ignore small areas of damage.

Yes, LP SmartSide accepts solid-color acrylic latex stains. Stains penetrate the surface rather than forming a film, so they won't peel — but they typically don't last as long as paint (5–8 years vs. 7–15 years). Semi-transparent stains are not recommended by LP for their products.

The substrate warranty (up to 50 years) covers the engineered wood itself, not the paint finish — unless you chose the factory-applied SmartFinish option, which carries its own 15-year finish warranty. Field-applied paint is the homeowner's responsibility.

Late May through early October, when temperatures are consistently between 50°F and 85°F with low humidity. Avoid painting in direct sunlight on hot days — early morning on south/west walls works best. Never paint if rain is expected within 4 hours.

Check cut edges and the back side of a removed piece if possible. All factory edges come pre-primed, but field cuts must be primed before installation. If bare wood is visible on any edge, it wasn't properly primed — and that's where moisture problems will start.

LP requires 100% acrylic latex paint or solid-color acrylic latex stain. Do not use oil-based paints, elastomeric coatings, or products containing linseed oil. Two coats over a quality primer is the standard recommendation.
